Shopping – Local products
The market of Corfu is pretty big and well supplied with all every day products. You will certainly find in abundance the most popular souvenirs, available in all tourist places of Greece. However, don’t miss to go for the local products, all of them very interesting and tasty. Try the local olive oil, very tasty and fine. The spoonful sweet made of the fruit kumquat, from which they also make the homonymous liquor, sounds very exotic and has an unforgettable taste. You should also taste and bring back home “mandolata”, a white soft sweet with almonds, “mandoles” (caramelized almonds), “pasteli” (a sweet made of honey and sesame), excellent “spoonful sweets” (fruits boiled in syrup and offered in small quantity, only a spoonful), biscuits, several etiquettes of high quality local wines and ouzo.
Cooking of Corfu
The original traditional cooking will impress the most demanding palate. You may taste local dishes, sweets and drinks in numerous traditional taverns in the town, in the coastal fish tavernsas well as in the small taverns of the inland mountainous villages. And of course, at the restaurant of our hotel you will find excellent dishes of European and Greek cooking and several choices of creative local cooking.
Most of the recipes of local cooking are unique and original and are not found elsewhere in Greece. Local cooking is pretty far from the oriental cooking common in the rest of Greece, and recalls the Venetian taste from which the kitchen of Corfu has been influenced. Even the names of the dishes keep their names for ages. “Pastitsada” is a unique way of cooking rooster or veal in tomato sauce, seasoned with pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and accompanied with macheroni. “Bourdeto” is pieces of big fish cooked in picant sauce; “sofrito” is veal tenderloin cooked with garlic, parsley and vinegar.
But, as the Corfiots state, your experience of Corfu will remain incomplete if you don’t taste “sykomaida”, a paste of fig seasoned with pepper (it goes very well with ouzo) and drink the pretty refreshing “tsitsibira”. This is the way to fully understand the spirit of the island!
